Light Paints on Snow

mixed-media installation with kiln glass, aluminum, steel cable and fasteners

This work features the beauty of colour and glass and the magical qualities of the winter sun and snow. In our northern winters the atmosphere and the sky-space become charged, the landscape becomes simpler and purer, and both lighting and shadows become more prominent.  Cables of coloured art glass are held up against the sky so as to catch the sun’s rays, turning the pieces of glass into sparkling jewels and casting coloured shadows onto the white canvas of the snowy ground. As the sun changes position in the sky, the shadows too change shape and position, creating an installation of ever-changing patterns. In this photo the sculpture is shown against an overcast sky. Created for the National Capital Commission.
